Sometimes it’s hard to come up with what to say in conversation. Do you need a quick kick in the brain to get things going again? Don’t know where to find quick inspiration to take the conversation to a different place? Here’s a great game that you can play (without the other person knowing) to help you jumpstart your conversations.

This game is called “First/Last Letter”, and was taught to me by a fantastic improviser by the name of Lauren Pritchard.

Listen intently to what the other person is saying, and pay attention to the last letter of the last word the other person says. Then, start your next sentence using the last letter of the last word as the first letter of your first word. There it is: instant inspiration. Not anything to worry about. That’s all you need to know. Why? You know why. Yes, I am playing the game by writing the sentences you are reading! Good huh? How are you going to get better by just sitting there? Everybody knows the only way you’re going to get better by going out and DOING IT!

And remember, you only have to match the other person’s last letters. You don’t have to match your own (like I did above).
